Every Sunday night my boyfriend and I watch Top Gear (UK). This week one of the hosts, James May, got to test out the Ferrari FF (Ferrari Four) which is the company’s first production four-wheel drive model. It features a seven-speed double clutch semi-automatic paddle shift system, which only works in first through fourth gears. As James proved during the show, putting the Ferrari into fifth gear renders the four wheel drive useless.
What’s fascinating about the Ferrari FF is that the design of the four wheel drive is significantly different than the industry standard. There are two gear boxes, which are supposedly helps with efficiency, but the result is that only 20 percent of the engine’s torque makes it to the front wheels. In a standard four wheel drive there is one gear box and a unit that splits the torque evenly between front and back wheels. While I don’t agree with Ferrari’s reasoning for straying from tried and true, I would love to get my hands on one. With a $300,000 price tag, the chances of one rolling into the manual transmission repair West Seattle are slim.
